1. Where We Work: The Valve Hall Cooling System

In modern power grids, ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission lines carry electricity across thousands of miles. The true heart of this system is the converter valve (also called the valve hall). When these giant stations work, they generate massive amounts of heat. If they get too hot, the whole power grid fails.

To prevent this, engineering teams build a specialized water cooling skid (or cooling loop). You can see these complex systems in Figure 1 and Figure 2. These loops contain heavy-duty water pumps, stainless steel pipes, heat exchangers, and deionized water tanks.

Crucially, the system relies on automated valves to manage the water flow. These valves open, close, and adjust constantly to control the temperature. If a single valve fails, the cooling stops, the converter valve overheats, and the power grid goes dark.

2. The Real Problems: Why Standard Valves Fail

When engineers design cooling loops for power stations, they face four major challenges. Standard, low-cost valves simply cannot handle these harsh conditions.

Extreme Cold and High Heat

Many power stations operate in remote mountains or freezing deserts. In winter, the outside temperature drops to -40°C. In summer, the baking sun pushes temperatures up to +60°C.

  • The Fail Point: Standard electric actuators use cheap grease that freezes solid in winter. When the motor tries to turn the frozen gears, it burns out. At the same time, standard rubber seals become brittle in the cold and crack, causing expensive fluid leaks.

Severe Water Hammer Shocks

To move water through the massive pipes shown in Figure 2, the system uses high-power water pumps. Every time these pumps start up, shut down, or switch paths, they create a massive shockwave inside the pipes. Engineers call this the water hammer effect.

  • The Fail Point: Water hammer creates a sudden, violent twist against the valve plate. If an electric actuator does not have enough turning power (torque) or strong internal parts, this sudden twist will snap the valve stem or strip the metal gears inside the actuator.

Strict Water Purity Requirements

The cooling loop uses pure deionized water. This water must stay completely clean to prevent electricity from arcing through the liquid.

  • The Fail Point: Common industrial valves often leak oil, grease, or metal flakes into the water line. This dirt ruins the water purity and can cause short circuits inside the high-voltage converter station.

Non-Stop Hunting and Gear Wear

The control computer constantly tells the valve to open or close by just 1% or 2% to keep the temperature perfect.

  • The Fail Point: Low-quality valves cannot make these tiny movements accurately. They overshoot the target, then try to correct themselves, and overshoot again. This constant back-and-forth shaking is called hunting. Hunting quickly burns out electric motors and ruins the gear teeth.

3. How OMKEE Fixed These Problems

OMKEE (Wuhan OMEC Technology) designed a complete fluid automation solution to solve every single one of these problems. We providedelectric valve, including heavy-duty electric actuators, 3-way direct-mount ball valves, and wafer butterfly valves.

Here is exactly how OMKEE hardware solves each field issue:

We Built for -40°C to +60°C Environments

We do not use standard materials. OMKEE offers specialized actuator builds rated for -40°C to +60°C.

  • Our Solution: We pack our actuator gearboxes with aviation-grade low-temperature grease that never freezes. We also use premium PTFE (Teflon) and Fluororubber seals. These components stay flexible in extreme cold, preventing motor lockups and keeping the valve completely leak-free all year round.

We Added a 1.5x Torque Safety Reserve

To defeat water hammer, we made our actuators much stronger than the standard requirement.

  • Our Solution: We engineer every OMKEE motor with a 1.3x to 1.5x torque safety margin. Inside the gearbox, we use heavy-duty 40Cr alloy steel worm shafts that undergo professional heat treatment. When water hammer hits the valve, our heavy-duty spline connections and oversized motors easily absorb the shock. Nothing snaps, and nothing strips.

We Designed Clean, Direct-Mount Valves

For pure water lines, we supplied our Q985F Series Sanitary 3-Way Tri-Clamp Ball Valve.

  • Our Solution: We cast the valve body from high-grade, corrosion-resistant stainless steel. We polish the inside to a smooth mirror finish so dirt cannot hide. The valve uses a fully encapsulated PTFE seat, meaning the seals tightly wrap around the ball to eliminate dead zones. Furthermore, our ISO 5211 direct-mount high-platform design connects the actuator directly to the valve without messy brackets, keeping the whole setup clean and lightweight.

We Delivered 0.5% High-Precision Modulating

To stop valve hunting, we upgraded the brain of the actuator.

  • Our Solution: Our regulating models feature a built-in digital servo controller driven by solid-state thyristors (SCR). This system delivers an accurate 0.5% positioning precision and handles up to 1,200 starts per hour. Our smart software tells the valve to slow down gently as it reaches the exact target. This stops overshoot, eliminates hunting entirely, and keeps the system running smoothly.

4. The Results: What We Delivered

Since deployment in major converter station cooling loops, OMKEE automated valve packages have proven their value through real field performance:

  • Zero Unplanned Downtime: Every single OMKEE unit must pass a mandatory Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) before shipment. We submerge the actuator underwater and apply 0.2 MPa of positive pressure to guarantee a true IP68 waterproof seal. We also run 1500V insulation tests. Because of this, our valves have handled thousands of pump cycles without a single breakdown.

  • Lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO): High-priced foreign brand names charge a premium for standard features. OMKEE offers identical or superior technical performance at a fraction of the cost. Our maintenance-free design means users save money on both initial purchase costs (CAPEX) and long-term repair costs (OPEX).

  • Guaranteed Grid Security: Thanks to our precise flow control and cold-weather reliability, the water skids keep the converter valves perfectly cool. OMKEE successfully protects the heart of the power grid, ensuring steady electricity for thousands of homes.
